Dean Zarriello named interim chief information officer for Johns Hopkins University, Medicine

Zarriello currently serves as senior IT director for the Enterprise Technology Services group, chief network officer for JHU and the Health System

Dean Zarriello, who currently serves as senior IT director for the Enterprise Technology Services group and chief network officer for Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Health System, has been chosen to serve as interim vice provost and chief information officer for JHU and interim chief information officer for Johns Hopkins Medicine, beginning this week. Zarriello steps into the role following the departure of Dwight Raum, who took over the interim role following the retirement of Stephanie Reel last year.

Zarriello joined Johns Hopkins in 1997 and moved to his current position in 2013. Since then, he has overseen multiple IT functions including data centers, networking, telecommunications, cloud computing, client technology services, servers, storage, collaboration, messaging and directory services, help desk operations, and the infrastructure project management office.

During his tenure, Zarriello has focused on standardizing and integrating data and telecommunication networks throughout the Hopkins organization and created a metro fiber infrastructure that interconnects all major Johns Hopkins campuses to provide a robust backbone for data and telecom systems. He was involved in infrastructure readiness for all six Epic go-lives for the Johns Hopkins Health System and played a role in National Science Foundation and state grant initiatives that led to the creation of the Maryland Advanced Research Computing Center on the Bayview Campus.

Zarriello is chair of the Institutional Computing Standards Committee for Johns Hopkins University, co-chair of the Institutional Computing Standards Committee for the Johns Hopkins Health System, and serves on the board of directors for the Maryland Educational Enterprise Consortium.

"We are confident he will bring his technical expertise, customer service skills, and commitment to our mission to this vital role," said Robert Kasdin, senior vice president, chief financial officer, and chief operating officer for Johns Hopkins Medicine; and Laurent Heller, senior vice president for finance and administration for Johns Hopkins University.

Johns Hopkins has retained Russell Reynolds Associates to lead an executive search for a permanent replacement and has convened a search committee with representatives from the university and health system to identify candidates for the position.
