Faculty Expert Profile

Noah Cowan

  • Professor

Affiliations

  • Whiting School of Engineering

Noah Cowan researches the neuromechanics of motion, working at the nexus of neuroscience and engineering. His innovations in robotics and discoveries in neuroscience aim to advance neuroprosthetics development and physical rehabilitation.

Cowan founded and directs the Locomotion in Mechanical and Biological Systems (LIMBS) Laboratory, where his team works to uncover principles of animal and robot sensory guidance. The lab, collaborating closely with neuroscientists, uses dynamical systems and control theory to discover how the brain and body work together to achieve agile movement.

Cowan's team is known for research using exotic creatures such as the electric knife fish to build new algorithms and robotic devices.
