Karen Fleming's research is motivated by the power that a deep understanding of the physics/biology intersection can bring to disease, evolution, and biological design. She studies proteins that live in membranes on the outer surface of E. coli bacteria.

Fleming leads a basic science lab that investigates the forces that create protein structures and folds, and how molecules interact with one another. Her goal is to better understand bacterial proteins.
