WSE celebrates outstanding staff

Among the Olympics-themed event's award winners: 'the Simone Biles of strategy management, the Michael Phelps of lifelong learning, and the Usain Bolt of network infrastructure'

The Whiting School of Engineering hosted its annual Staff Awards, complete with crab cakes and cupcakes, at noon on July 9. This year's theme was Whiting Olympics in celebration of the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

To kick off the event, the opening torch was carried into Homewood's Glass Pavilion by Jay, the university mascot, and an Olympics-themed video showcased Whiting's recent Field Day. Dean Ed Schlesinger's remarks alluded to Olympians among the staff, including "the Simone Biles of strategy management, the Michael Phelps of lifelong learning, and the Usain Bolt of network infrastructure."

There were a record number of nominations this year—130, up from 113 last year, roughly 20% of the staff. The winners of the awards in three categories were:

  • Rookie of the Year: Toni DeTallo, administrative coordinator, Computer Science
  • Leadership: Debbie Lantry, senior administrative manager, Civil and Systems Engineering
  • Excellence: Denise Brown, budget analyst, Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute
  • Excellence: Sonya Brown, academic program administrator, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
  • Excellence: Wick Eisenberg, senior communications specialist, Ralph O'Connor Sustainable Energy Institute

Meredith Stewart, interim vice president for human resources, was a special guest at the event.
