Search launched for next Berman Institute of Bioethics director

A search committee has been formed to find a successor to Ruth Faden, director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, who announced in June that she would step down from that position and remain on the faculty.

In a letter to the university community, Robert C. Lieberman, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, said that the committee has been charged with conducting "a comprehensive international search and assembling a diverse pool of exceptional candidates for this important leadership position."

The opportunity to identify the next director, Lieberman said, is an important moment for Johns Hopkins.

"The Berman Institute has long been a model for collaboration at Johns Hopkins. One of the largest and most influential bioethics centers in the world, it is fueled by an expert faculty that spans our schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, and Arts and Sciences," Lieberman said. "The institute tackles the world's most pressing and challenging ethical issues; trains and mentors future leaders in bioethics, health, and science; and provides policy advice for government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and private sector organizations."

The search committee, whose members span the university, will be chaired by Peter Pronovost, a professor in the School of Medicine; senior vice president for patient safety and quality, Johns Hopkins Medicine; and director of the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins. Phil Tang, vice provost for academic services, will serve as vice chair. Isaacson, Miller, a leading global executive search firm, will help facilitate the search process.

Members of the university community are encouraged to share their thoughts about the position and submit nominations directly to the search committee at JHUBioethicsSearch@jhu.edu.
