Class of 2020 Rhodes Scholar Vijayasundaram Ramasamy, A&S '18, plans to head to Oxford this fall to improve his understanding of global public health. Ramasamy, policy and budget adviser in the Office of Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, wants to help governments generate the resources, trust, and access needed "to solve the big problems."
He already has a head start: Ramasamy led the team that drafted Kansas' COVID-19 reopening plan, which underscored for him the critical importance of public service.
"It's been incredibly inspiring to see what public health workers are doing every day, with so few resources and with such an incredible amount of pressure," said Ramasamy, who majored in public health studies at Hopkins. "It really solidified for me that I want to understand how people create sustainable health systems around the world, and how we can defend government services in the United States."
After pursuing a Master of Science degree in Comparative Social Policy and a Master of Public Policy degree at Oxford, Ramasamy expects to return to public service. He's also not ruling out someday running for elected office.
