Charles Street construction project begins

Project will result in detour, lane reduction beginning first week of September

Phase 1 of the Charles Street construction project near the Homewood campus launches with the start of the fall semester.

Drivers will find a construction detour and lane reduction between 28th Street and University Parkway beginning the first week of September if roadwork begins on time. Preconstruction activities on the 26-month project kicked off earlier this summer.

The $28 million project is financed in part by a $2.5 million contribution from the university, and the goal is a safer and more attractive roadway for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.

While construction is under way, pedestrians will be able to cross the work area at designated locations, which will change as roadwork progresses. Regular updates will be shared with the university community.

The website for the project is charlesstreet.mdprojects.com. The university will post Johns Hopkins-specific information at fm.jhu.edu/charlesstreetconstruction. Questions can be sent to charlesstconstruction@jhu.edu.
