Emily Boss is a professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, with joint appointments in pediatrics and health policy and management. She is chief of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology and a nationally recognized expert in pediatric ear, nose, and throat care.

Boss's research and clinical work center on improving how surgical care is delivered, from personal communications to organizational change. Her research program focuses on physician-patient communication and decision-making in elective surgery. She studies how families weigh options for their child's care, how surgeons communicate recommendations, and how communication impacts health outcomes. Her work informs conversations on overuse, medical decision-making, and ethical dimensions of care in pediatrics and surgery.

She is also a physician leader for hospital and health system initiatives that align clinical processes with the revenue cycle.
