Walk of Remembrance
Description
The inaugural Ritual of Remembrance, held in January 2022, was a community event designed to recognize and honor the legacies of those who were enslaved on the property that now makes up the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University. The Walk of Remembrance invites Baltimore residents, Johns Hopkins students, staff, faculty and administration to walk in the path of Homewood's Black ancestors, beginning at Homewood Museum and ending at the Tubman Memorial Garden on Art Museum Drive.
Witness featured monologue as performed by Africana Studies sophomore Yasmine Bolden on Sheilah Kast's On the Record on WYPR; contemplate the struggles, triumphs, and everyday lives of those enslaved to the reverberation of the drum procession; celebrate their lives and legacies in a performance by the acclaimed tap dancer, Briane Ali; and finally speak their names that have been uncovered from Johns Hopkins' historical record.
There is no required ticket to participate in the Walk of Remembrance, but attendees who wish to tour Homewood Museum on the day of the walk must register with the museum.
