The recently opened Center for Staff Life Design is off to a great start: More than 100 staff members participated in workshops and one-on-ones during its first Career Clinic, held in March.
The CSLD provides Johns Hopkins University staff members with access to personal and professional growth opportunities through a well-designed life, including career foundation support to help with resumes, job search, networking, and professional social media like LinkedIn.
Career Clinics
The monthly Career Clinics, which are virtual, provide structure and guidance with resume writing, job search, LinkedIn profile creation, professional networking, and other career-related skills. Supported by 13 Life Design and Talent Acquisition volunteers, they include three components, each of which supports staff at various stages of their career:
- Micro-site resources: A curated website of online resources includes artificial intelligence tools, resume tools, external career support, and more, as well as action plans for staff impacted by employment actions or job insecurity. Short videos help staff get oriented to foundational skills such as resumes and LinkedIn.
- Workshops: Staff looking to prepare for career or job transitions can attend workshops in April and May to learn more about current career trends and skills. Workshops include Resume Writing 101, Networking and Job Search, LinkedIn Optimization, Elevator Pitches, and Transferrable Skills.
- One-on-one resume reviews: After using CSLD's AI tool, Vmock, to optimize their resumes, staff can engage in 30-minute one-on-one resume reviews and career counseling with CSLD staff and JHU recruiters.

Life design beyond career fundamentals
In addition to Career Clinics, the Center for Staff Life Design offers programming geared toward personal and professional insight. Staff and supervisors are encouraged to take part individually in these programs and can also request them for their teams at no cost.
If you would like to schedule a life design workshop or presentation for your team, division, event, employee resource group, or colleagues who are curious about exploring life design together, you can use this form to request one of the Career Clinic topics or one of the workshops listed below. Requests typically need to be made one to two months in advance.
The CSLD in-person workshops listed below will be taking place on various campuses. See the schedule and register here for these sessions:
- Get Curious: Good Work. Identify what "good work" looks like, observe and record your own experiences, and explore ways to prototype activities in your work that energize you.
- Imagine Possibilities: Reframing Limiting Beliefs. Learn how to reframe constraints in your worklife, imagine different potential paths, and explore ways to prototype those paths.
- Imagine Possibilities: Tiny Habits. Understand how tiny habits can help you achieve your personal and professional aspirations, identify those you want to pursue, and commit to putting them in action.
- Experience More: Curiosity Conversations. Identify your goals, explore stories and experiences related to you, and receive support from CSLD staff as you proceed.
- Craft Your Story. Identify why what you do matters, articulate the way your work serves the Hopkins community, and learn how to tell your story.
- Design Thinking for Leadership Practice. Learn more about design thinking and how you can use it to lead and engage your team.
More options
Staff looking to take advantage of existing life design courses geared toward a more holistic career view also have options available through MyLearning. Design Your Work Life, for example, is an on-demand e-learning course created to empower you to see your worklife in a way that keeps you inspired, energized, and growing every day. It introduces a holistic framework to help you align who you are, what you do, and what you believe.
