Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund pauses disbursement of grants

Chairs say contributions designated through the United Way campaign had declined through the post-COVID years

In a letter sent recently to friends, donors, and grantees of the Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund, the chairs of the fund wrote that they are temporarily pausing the disbursement of grants offered for fiscal year 2025.

Since 2007 and in partnership with the United Way, Johns Hopkins has provided support to nonprofit organizations that both serve the communities in close proximity to Hopkins campuses and are associated with Johns Hopkins through employee and/or institutional involvement. These designated funds have been raised through payroll deductions and internal fundraising of Johns Hopkins employees and divisions.

Through the post-COVID years, the chairs wrote, they have seen a decline in dollars specifically designated for the Neighborhood Fund. "With fewer and fewer raised in the last two years, we lessened the previous grant amounts of $15,000 in order to provide some funding to as many applicants as possible," they wrote. "Facing a third year, we recognize this is neither effective nor sustainable."

The chairs said they will communicate again with the plans for moving forward.
