Though the beginning of a new school year can be an exciting time for families, it also can present challenges in navigating and coordinating child care, school, and extracurricular schedules along with work. As the first day of school approaches, remember that Johns Hopkins University's Office of Benefits & Worklife offers valuable resources to support you and your family.

Maryland Family Network

The Maryland Family Network is an advocate and catalyst for the development of a strong system of quality child care, early education, and family support. It is considered the state's expert in quality child care and provides personalized resources for finding licensed child care.

Use the locate search tool to find available day care, as well as before- and after-school care. The tool not only provides you with direct access to information about all registered and licensed programs throughout the state but also identifies providers with immediate vacancies or potential future openings.

Care@Work

Full-time, benefits-eligible Johns Hopkins affiliates have access to a host of care benefits through Care@Work. These benefits help manage your family care needs while balancing work and include a free premium membership to Care.com as well as to Backup Care for children and adults.

Premium membership to Care.com provides unlimited access to the world's largest network of caregivers. You have access to profiles, reviews, and background checks, making it easier to find reliable and trustworthy care.

  • You can post a job to find qualified caregivers for various needs, whether for children, pets, or adults, or to help with household tasks. This flexibility is particularly beneficial during the school year if you need after-school care, tutoring, or occasional babysitting.
  • All caregivers must complete the CareCheck process before interacting with families on the platform. You can conduct additional background checks through the Safety Center.

Backup Care is vetted, subsidized adult and child care you can use when your regular care is not available.

  • Eligible Hopkins employees and students have access to 10 backup care days per calendar year (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31). The cost is subsidized by the university and is based on your salary, with your hourly rate ranging from $6 to $10. Learn more about Backup Care here.
  • To make the most of your backup care days, plan ahead. If you know your child's school will be closed for professional development, a holiday, cleaning, or renovation, book your care ahead of time. In-home backup care can be requested up to 90 days in advance, and in-center backup care up to 30 days in advance.
