FIRST STEPS

Onboarding for new hires

Whether you or someone you're welcoming is new to the university, here are resources you should know about

For new employees, and their departments, the first 30 days on the job are a critical time for getting oriented and settling in at Hopkins. Luckily there are resources to help new faculty, staff, and bargaining unit members tackle the important matters right away. Whether you're a new hire yourself or are welcoming someone in their first days at the university, here are four things you should know about.

Benefits orientation sessions for new employees

As part of the onboarding process, the university offers new employees a live orientation webinar to help them better understand its benefits plans, program offerings, and policies.

Benefits orientation for new full-time faculty and staff is held at 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. The 90-minute Zoom meeting, hosted by the Office of Benefits & Worklife, includes an overview of the benefits options offered by the university, with time for a Q&A session. Topics include health and life benefits and insurance, flexible spending and health savings accounts, voluntary benefits, work-life programs, the Johns Hopkins Employee Assistance Program, and more.

Registration is required for participation. If you're unable to attend a live session, a recording of the presentation is available here. Allow two minutes for the video to load.

New LiUNA bargaining unit members are eligible to enroll in benefits after completing the 90-day probationary period. Benefits & Worklife hosts monthly in-person benefits orientations at Eastern specifically for those employees; your manager will notify you of the time and date.

Enrolling in health and life benefits

New faculty and staff members will receive an email from Benefits inviting them to elect or waive benefits. Action must be taken within 30 days or you will be enrolled automatically with individual coverage in the CareFirst BCBS Core PPO Plan. Medical plan options for faculty and staff can be found here.

LiUNA bargaining unit members can learn about available plans here.

New to JHU Networking Group

A monthly networking group is hosted virtually to connect new employees with under one year of service with fellow new hires from different departments so that they can share resources and experiences and build their network at Hopkins. The New to JHU Networking Group meets from noon to 1 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month over Zoom. Registration is required; click here to register and to add the links to your calendar.

In addition, a Microsoft Teams group has been created for this group for resource sharing and networking; if you would like to be added, email worklife@jhu.edu. Be sure to include the name of the group.

Contact the Benefits Service Center at 410-516-2000 or benefits@jhu.edu with any questions.

Getting new managers up to speed

Whether you're new to JHU or are moving for the first time into a management or supervisory position, you'll want to be familiar with the programs, policies, and services that will help you best manage your direct reports. Information about managing time, absences, performance, and more can be found here.
