September shines an encouraging light on suicide prevention with World Suicide Prevention Day (9/10), National Suicide Prevention Week (9/10–9/16), and Suicide Prevention Month (9/1–9/30).
These observances remind individuals everywhere that they don't have to solve life's challenges alone. Understanding the issue of suicide, being aware of the warning signs, and knowing how to talk about it can create a more compassionate society in which those in need feel more comfortable seeking help.
To help support efforts in raising awareness and encouraging action throughout the month, the Johns Hopkins Employee Assistance Program (JHEAP) has compiled the following resources.
- Shine a Light on Suicide Prevention flyer with suggestions for making a difference throughout September and all year long
- Manager's Guide for recognizing warning signs and supporting an employee who may be at risk
- Concerned Colleague's Guide for recognizing warning signs and supporting a co-worker who may be at risk
The Johns Hopkins Employee Assistance Program offers free and confidential assessment and referral services to you—and your household members—to help when things seem overwhelming. The program also offers referrals to help alleviate stress related to caregiving, daily convenience, health and wellness, and legal and financial needs. JHEAP can be reached 24/7 by calling 888-978-1262, logging on to myccaonline.com (company code: JHEAP), or through the CCA@YourService app.
