All full-time benefits-eligible faculty and staff will receive a confirmation of their 2018 elections as well as important information regarding access to their 2017 W-2 by mail in mid-December.
Confirmation statement
The confirmation statement includes your 2018 health, life, disability, and flexible spending account elections. Review the statement carefully to be sure that the elections shown are those that you intended for next year. If you are covering a child who is currently age 26, his coverage will end Dec. 31, 2017; this is reflected on the confirmation statement.
If you determine that your enrollment is not correct, you must act on this no later than Dec. 31, 2017. Here's how:
- Email the Benefits Service Center at benefits@jhu.edu with the correction(s).
- Enter "2018 Annual Enrollment Correction" in the subject line.
- You will receive a return email acknowledging receipt of your request, and a new confirmation in January.
If your correction is to your beneficiary, you can make this update online on the myChoices page of the Benefits website by choosing Life Events on the Health & Life benefits button.
2018 health care flexible spending account
If you have a balance of $500 or less in your 2017 health care flexible spending account, that balance will automatically carry over into 2018. You will be able to confirm this carryover after the 2017 claims-filing deadline of April 30, 2018, by viewing your WageWorks account. The mailed confirmation statement does not reflect this carryover amount.
Voluntary benefits program
Voluntary benefits enrollments are not shown on the confirmation statement. These plans are confirmed by the carriers. Should you need to make corrections to your voluntary benefits enrollment, contact Mercer customer service before 2 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2017, at 866-795-9362.
W-2 action required
Johns Hopkins has created a new, in-house process to deliver W-2 forms to all employees so they can complete their taxes in 2018. Log into Employee Self Service before Dec. 31, 2017, to make sure your mailing address is up-to-date and to select your 2017 W-2 delivery preference—electronic or mail. You can access ESS from the myJHU portal under the HR tab on the left.
If you elect to receive your W-2 electronically, your 2017 W-2 will be available in ESS in January 2018; you will need to log into ESS to consent. This action is required even if you approved online delivery in the past.
If you do not complete the consent by Dec. 31, 2017, your W-2 will be mailed on or before Jan. 31, 2018, to the address you have on file with Human Resources. If that is the option you prefer, it is still important that you go to the ESS page to make sure that your mailing information is up-to-date.
For step-by-step directions, go to the 2017 W-2 forms information web page.
You can contact the Tax Office with questions at tax@jhu.edu or 443-997-8688. For questions concerning your Benefits enrollment, contact the Benefits Service Center at 410-516-2000 or benefits@jhu.edu.
