Did you know that if you are enrolled in the supplemental life insurance plan (above the $10,000 coverage provided by the university), you have access to free will preparation services?
Will preparation is offered by Hyatt Legal Plans, a MetLife company, and provides eligible employees with face-to-face access to a network of 13,000 participating attorneys for preparing or updating a will, living will, and power of attorney. When you use a participating plan attorney, the attorney's fees are fully covered.
Like life insurance, a carefully prepared will and a power of attorney are important. These estate-planning documents can ensure that your decisions are honored and your family is protected.
Will. Your will ensures that your property will be distributed and your family will be cared for exactly as you wish. Without a will, the courts may decide how your property is distributed.
Living will. Your living will specifies the types of medical treatments you want in the event that you become unable to express those wishes directly. The document not only ensures that you get the care you want but protects your loved ones from making difficult decisions on your behalf.
Durable power of attorney. In the event you become incapacitated, this document allows you to designate someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf.
Faculty and staff who participate in MetLife's Supplemental Life Insurance Plan (coverage in the amount of $50,000, 1.5 times base pay, 2.5 times base pay, and 4 times base pay) can obtain services by contacting Hyatt Legal Plans at 800-821-6400. Bargaining unit employees can obtain free will preparation services if enrolled in supplemental life insurance at 2 times base salary.
When you call, a client service representative will ask you to provide the Johns Hopkins University Group Number (106567) along with the last four digits of your Social Security number. The representative will help you locate a participating plan attorney in your area and provide you with a case number to give to the attorney you choose. You contact the attorney's office to make an appointment.
To receive legal advice for a wide range of legal matters beyond the free will preparation services, full-time university employees can purchase a voluntary legal services plan during annual benefits enrollment in the fall. For $15 a month through payroll deduction, you can receive fully covered legal representation for civil suits, traffic ticket defense, creditor issues, purchase/sale/refinance of a primary residence, and other matters through Hyatt Legal Plans. For more information, go to the page of JHU voluntary benefits offered through Mercer Voluntary Benefits and select "Legal Insurance" from the quick links box.
