WorkLife Presents: Lunchtime workshops available to faculty and staff in May

A variety of workshops, events, and programs are offered to the Johns Hopkins community by the Office of Work, Life and Engagement to help faculty and staff enrich their personal and professional lives. Lunchtime workshops rotate on the East Baltimore, Homewood, and Keswick campuses and are led by WorkLife staff and experts from Johns Hopkins and elsewhere.

Registration is required for workshops but not for events unless indicated in the description. The workshop locations are posted in the registration system.

Well-Being: Learn How to Identify Your Cancer Screening and Prevention Strategies
Tuesday, May 10, noon to 1 p.m., East Baltimore
Thursday May 12, noon to 1 p.m., Homewood

May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. As spring progresses into summer, there are decisions we can make to prevent cancer and, if we are diagnosed with it, to improve our outcomes. Join Marie Borsellino from the Johns Hopkins Managing Cancer at Work program to learn about skin cancer screenings and prevention. She also will review the Managing Cancer at Work Screening and Prevention Portal, which offers customized tools and basic information on preventing various types of cancer and the screening tests. The website will help you understand if you have risk factors that make your chances of a cancer diagnosis more likely, and how you can reduce your risk. Live Near Your Work and Other Incentive Programs for Homebuyers

Katie Schroeder, Live Near Your Work program coordinator, will discuss the steps employees need to take to use a LNYW grant to help purchase a home in Baltimore City. Staff from Live Baltimore will discuss additional financial incentives available to all homebuyers, whether or not they participate in the Johns Hopkins Live Near Your Work program. Register here.

Live Near Your Work: Purchasing a New Construction Home
Tuesday, May 17, noon to 1 p.m., East Baltimore
Thursday, May 19, noon to 1 p.m., Homewood

Katie Schroeder, Live Near Your Work program coordinator, will discuss the steps employees need to take to use a LNYW grant to help purchase a new or existing home in Baltimore City. Ryan Homes will explain what to expect when buying new construction, including its advantages, a typical timeline, and selecting options in addition to amenities already included. The real estate professionals involved in new construction purchases—developer, builder, lender, title company, and others—will be reviewed as well. Ryan Homes also will provide a sneak peek at its new development in Eager Park in East Baltimore. Register here.

The Plan for Personal Finance Series: Your Ideal Retirement
Thursday, May 19, 2:30 to 5:00 p.m., East Baltimore

Please join us if you would like to evaluate your retirement plan or put one in place, especially if you are within 10 years of retirement. A Certified Financial Planner will review the planning process and how your investment strategy should evolve as you near and enter retirement. This new workshop will include goal setting in retirement, generating income through retirement, and methods to prepare for potential financial challenges in retirement. Register here.

Toilet Training: Letting Your Child Lead the Way
Wednesday, May 25, 1 to 2 p.m., East Baltimore

Are your child and you ready for toilet training? Join Marlo Eldridge, pediatric nurse practitioner and director of the Voiding Improvement Program in the Johns Hopkins Hospital's Division of Pediatric Urology, to learn about toilet training for long-term success and urologic health. This workshop will focus on a comprehensive strategy for toilet training and tips to make learning this new skill a stress-free experience for both child and parent. Register here.

Events

Live Near Your Work on Wheels
Saturday, May 21, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Hop on the bus with Live Near Your Work and tour many of the eligible LNYW neighborhoods in Baltimore City. Katie Schroeder, LNYW program coordinator, will discuss how a LNYW grant can provide up to $25,000 toward buyer expenses such as a down payment and closing costs. Representatives from various neighborhood associations will be on hand to describe the housing styles, restaurants, hot spots, and more of their respective communities. The bus departs from Johns Hopkins at Eastern. Seating is limited, and registration is required.
