Johns Hopkins University hosted a Capitol Hill gathering for alumni and friends on June 11, welcoming more than 100 attendees for an evening of connecting and networking.
Speakers at the event, held at the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Constitution Avenue, included JHU President Ron Daniels, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, and U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume, who earned a master's degree from JHU in 1984.
"With the Hopkins Bloomberg Center now open, we are delighted to have a platform to support all of you and indeed, to ensure that the two-way zipline of ideas, expertise, and dialogue between Baltimore and D.C. has grown even stronger," Daniel said. "And we stand ready to work alongside you to ensure that the next chapter of the compact between government and universities is as compelling and fruitful as in the past."
Other attendees included JHU Provost Ray Jayawardhana; Cybele Bjorklund, executive director of the Hopkins Bloomberg Center and vice president for federal strategy; School of Medicine Dean Theodore DeWeese; Carey Business School Dean Alex Triantis; School of Nursing Dean Sarah Szanton; and James Steinberg, dean of the School of Advanced International Studies.
"Johns Hopkins has a vast network of influential alumni in D.C.—we've known and worked with them for years," said Melisa Lindamood, JHU's assistant vice president for federal strategy. "But what made this event special is that they got to know each other. Politics is a relationship business, and this event allowed individuals to discover a shared experience that was perhaps unknown before. That connection can spark dialogue, which serves us all."
