Nine Peabody alumni to sing for Pope Francis during Mass in Washington

Nine graduates of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University will be part of the choir Wednesday at Mass led by Pope Francis during his visit to Washington, D.C.

Pope Francis will celebrate 4:15 p.m. Mass on the east portico of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the University Mall at The Catholic University of America. The Shrine choir, composed of 30 singers, includes nine Peabody alums: sopranos Molly Young and Sara McKimmie; altos Janna Critz, Sonya Knussen, and Kate Jackman; tenor Andrew Spady; and baritones Jeffrey Gates, Brian Mummert, and Andrew Sauvageau.

During the event, Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Junipero Serra, a Spanish-born Franciscan Friar known for starting nine Spanish missions in California in the 1700s. Approximately 25,000 people are expected to attend Mass, which will be said in Spanish.
