On April 2, nearly 400 Johns Hopkins alumni, current students, and friends gathered at the Four Seasons Hotel for Hopkins in Boston, an evening featuring a keynote by President Ron Daniels and a lively panel discussion on the arts and humanities, moderated by Professor Daniel Weiss.
Tom Dretler, A&S '91, a member of the School of Education's National Advisory Council and one of three co-chairs for the Boston gathering, said the planning team's goal was to create an event that reflected Boston's vibrant academic and research community.
"Given the recent challenges with federal funding cuts, we wanted to create a space where attendees could connect with university leaders and explore the vital role of arts and sciences," he says.
"President Daniels spoke about how Hopkins was committed to advancing its educational mission, even in spite of the regulatory challenges coming out of Washington and the impact on NIH and other sources of research funding," Dretler says.
For the panel discussion, Brian Shields, senior director of development and campaign communications at JHU, said Weiss, who leads the Taskforce on the Arts, spoke about the many ways Hopkins has supported and continues to support the arts and humanities across the enterprise.
Deborah Weidman, Eng '21, serves as co-chair of the Hopkins Alumni Boston Regional Chapter, one of more than 40 alumni communities across the U.S. and 10 international locations. She and Rachel Safer, A&S '00—her chapter co-chair and event co-lead— are excited to keep the momentum going with upcoming Boston chapter events. Safer agrees, noting there was a lot of enthusiasm from attendees at the Hopkins in Boston event, including 160 former students who had never attended an alumni gathering before.
Our volunteer-driven regional chapters offer a variety of events from educational and cultural to social and athletic. We hope you'll join us in a community near you! https://alumni.jhu.edu/chapters
