Acclaimed writer and University of Baltimore Professor D. Watkins, Ed '14 (MEd), received a 2024 James Beard Media Award in the Beverage category for his essay, published in Salon, "Navigating the New Sober Boom: Where 'a Person's Sobriety Is as Unique as Their Fingerprint.'"
"After my 40th birthday, I started eating cleaner and stopped drinking alcohol," Watkins says. "My essay looks at how I rebuilt my relationship with my younger cousin through beverages such as mocktails."
Watkins says many people have told him his essay resonated with their own experiences relating to alcohol and sobriety. Next up for Watkins is the Aug. 4 release of his new book, On a Move: Philadelphia's Notorious Bombing and a Native Son's Lifelong Battle for Justice, co-written with Mike Africa Jr. The book recounts the day in 1985 when the Philadelphia police dropped a bomb on a residential neighborhood, occupied by a Black-led civil liberties organization, killing 11 civilians.
