Job No. 1: Entertain our readers.
We often say we love stories here at Johns Hopkins Magazine—and we do. We come across germs of ideas or hear pitches that we simply can't resist. A Hopkins researcher is studying the bones of generations' worth of lemurs held in captivity? One of our alums is now Hollywood's lead vet? Please tell us more. In fact, dig into both these topics in this very issue.
But we never want to lose sight of who we're telling these stories to. You. I've been fortunate to hear directly from many of you these past few months. You tell us when we're doing things right and when, occasionally, we've gotten them wrong. Nobody can say our readers are not critical and vigilant. We love that and welcome the feedback. The interactions remind us to do better and to keep striving for the next great story to tell.
We recently launched a monthly email newsletter called Dispatch to keep in even closer contact with you and lift the curtain a bit on our editorial process and what has our attention here in the office. The aim is for you to get to know us better along the way. If you haven't already, we encourage you to subscribe on the Hub. By way of the newsletter, I had a lovely exchange with one reader who, like me, was experiencing a pandemic-influenced reading rut. We shared book recommendations, and it's always nice to know you're not alone. The conversation was also a reminder that no matter where we are geographically or what our backgrounds are, we're all just passengers on this planet looking for some answers and connections. We hope to do our part by providing a bit of both. Thanks for reading.
