Johns Hopkins students explore new Bloomberg Student Center

As the fall semester began Monday, thousands of students and other Hopkins affiliates got their first look at the university's new Homewood campus social hub

The first day of classes Monday included many firsts for Johns Hopkins University's new Bloomberg Student Center: First practices in the dance studios, first performance in the theater, first events in the multipurpose rooms, and, for thousands of students, faculty, and staff members, a first look at JHU's new social hub.

"This is just so beautiful, so grand," junior Tristan Faze said. "As a transfer student, I came from a university with a lot fewer amenities, so to see this, I feel so grateful to be here and blessed with this opportunity."

In addition to exploring the new space, students sampled food from some of the dining partners that will soon set up spaces in the building, enjoyed performances from the pep band and cheerleading team, and collected student center merch.

"We're all super excited," first-year student Sabrina Levine said. "The space is amazing. It's super spacious, and I love all the natural light. It's really cool to see everyone in here."

The Bloomberg Student Center—named for JHU alum Michael R. Bloomberg, Engr '64, founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies, and the 108th mayor of New York City, in recognition of his extraordinary commitment to supporting students across Hopkins—is designed to meet the evolving needs of the Hopkins student community, creating spaces devoted to fostering connections and engagement. It includes a theater, dance studios, club meeting rooms, recording spaces, and an esports lounge, as well as areas for gathering with friends.

A phased opening of student center spaces and amenities is planned through the first year of operations, with food service and dining options set to open later in the fall semester. The building's official opening celebration will be held in October.
