Blue Jays with green thumbs celebrate Earth Month

The JHU community garden was the centerpiece for community building and impact during Earth Month celebrations at Eastern

During Earth Month, staff looking for ways to celebrate through service flocked to the Blue Jay's Perch, a community garden at JHU Eastern. The Get to Know the Blue Jay's Perch event, produced by the Office of Government, Community, and Economic Partnerships in collaboration with Blue Jay's Perch, introduced guests to the student-run garden through conversations and experiences. From a guided tour lead by GCE's Education Initiatives team members Brittany Martin and Alex Streim, to impromptu conversations with Director of Sustainability Julian Goresko about the early history of the JHU Community Garden, the event stirred excitement among guests about the beautiful vegetables, fruits, and herbs growing just steps away from JHU's track and field in the Waverly neighborhood.

In addition to the tour, guests listened to BJP community lead TJ Butler discuss the garden's accessible and organic urban farming initiative and connections to local food banks, including the Donald Bentley Food Pantry, located within walking distance of the garden. Guests also selected from a variety of packaged herbs to start their own gardens, and the group enjoyed lunch sponsored by Apple Spice.
