Description

Tim Besley and Andrés Velasco from the London School of Economics will join Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies faculty members Mine Senses and Pravin Krishna to discuss their upcoming publication: The London Consensus: Economic Principles for the 21st Century.

Louis Hyman, professor in political economy in JHU's Department of History and professor at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins, will moderate the discussion. Welcoming remarks will be provided by the Angela Hawken, professor at JHU's School of Government and Policy.

A generation ago, the so-called Washington Consensus laid out a series of dos and don'ts for policymakers around the world. Today that vision is recognized to have fallen short in a number of dimensions. The world has changed a great deal since 1989 and so has the collective wisdom on what sound policies look like. Drawing from the research and skills of over 50 high-profile scholars, this project strives to build a "London Consensus" around which new ideas can coalesce, providing practical solutions at the local, national, and global levels.

The goal of this work is to identify an alternative to the Washington Consensus and a set of new ideas—and policies—that can provide guidance to policymakers in dealing with the seemingly intractable global problems today.

The book is available to download open access from Oct. 16.
