At This Moment, in the Nation's Sky
Description
The Program in Latin America, Caribbean and Latinx Studies is glad to present Sandra Kogut for a screening of her film No Céu da Pátria Nesse Instante (At This Moment, in the Nation's Sky), followed by a Q&A. This 105-minute documentary from 2024 is in Portuguese with subtitles.
Synopsis
Shot during the turbulent months leading up to the recent Brazilian presidential elections and the subsequent storming of Congress, the Presidential Palace and the Supreme Court on Jan. 8, 2023, the film follows a sequence of key-moments through the eyes of some characters involved in the process. Located in very different parts of the country the characters share a direct involvement in the electoral process: they are office workers, poll inspectors, activists, or candidates' staff. They are not the characters we usually see under the spotlight during the electoral period; on the contrary, they are often invisible. And they are also from both sides of the political spectrum. At a time when the far right was in power and democracy was at risk, the film explores the existence of two parallel worlds unable to see each other.
