Sara Shaoul

Description

The Center for Visual Arts at Johns Hopkins University invites you to a Visiting Artist Talk with contemporary artist Sara Shaoul.

Shaoul explores social history, labor, and the body through an intersectional feminist lens, looking at the infrastructures of human experience, from economic systems to interpersonal dynamics, to understand how ideology is transmitted through intimate experience and expressed through the physical and social body.

Shaoul works conceptually in many media, including sculpture, video, image, sound, and performance. Informed by her background in cultural anthropology, Shaoul incorporates historical research and fieldwork into her practice. Drawing on a decade of experience as a photo editor in the magazine industry, Shaoul harnesses signifiers and symbols from popular visual culture to think about how ideas are produced and absorbed through images and text.
