Description

Join Dean Christopher Morphew and the School of Education for the 2025 Hedeman Lecture featuring alumna Jess Gartner (MAT '11). Gartner's remarks will focus on negotiation, leadership, and entrepreneurship in the field of education technology.

The William H. Hedeman Lecture Series is made possible through the generosity of Elizabeth N. Hedeman and provides an annual program addressing the important topic of negotiation and related concepts. This lectureship honors the legacy of Hedeman who became a skilled negotiator and taught negotiations for many years at Johns Hopkins University.

This event is co-sponsored by the Johns Hopkins School of Education, Carey Business School, and Pava Marie LaPere Center for Entrepreneurship. A reception follows the lecture.

About the speaker

Jess Gartner is the group vice president of resource planning solutions at PowerSchool. Previously, Gartner was the founder and CEO of Allovue, an education finance technology company, which was acquired by PowerSchool in 2024. Allovue helped schools and districts budget and manage over $50 billion in K-12 spending. Before founding Allovue in 2013, Gartner was a Teach For America corps member and taught middle school, where she experienced firsthand the impact of resource allocation on classroom success. Motivated by these insights, she set out to develop tools that empower educators and administrators to make data-driven financial decisions. Gartner holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master's in Teaching from the Johns Hopkins School of Education. She lived in Baltimore for 13 years before taking a nomadic tour around the U.S. for a year and resettling in Seattle with her cat, Darwin.
