Description

A web dashboard to visualize emissions from business travel is being developed as a Campus as a Living Lab research project to support the goals of Johns Hopkins' Climate Action and Sustainability Plan. You are invited to join a human-centered-design workshop where faculty and staff participants will chart a course for the dashboard to achieve positive change at the university. The dashboard will:

  1. Communicate the climate emissions impact of business travel (namely, air travel) to faculty and administrative leaders
  2. Enable estimates of air travel scope 3 emissions to allow for better decision-making
  3. Foster an enabling environment for mitigation efforts to address scope 3 emissions, which will follow on later and be driven by faculty and staff priorities

Design Process

The Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence, the hub for design and data science experts that launched the renowned Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, will provide design thinking expertise for the dashboard, facilitated by a Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health team with experience in human-centered design. Design thinking considers the feasibility, viability, and desirability of a solution. Engaging our community is a critical factor in building visualization platforms, which must be accessible and usable to intended users. Workshop participants representing faculty and staff across the university will provide vital input on the dashboard to the designers, including:

  • What key questions should the dashboard answer for users about the climate impact of Johns Hopkins business travelers?
  • How can dashboard users learn about monthly trends in travel emissions as well as how the pandemic has changed travel at Johns Hopkins?
  • What available strategies are there to minimize the emissions associated with trips?

Faculty and staff across the university are encouraged to sign up to participate in the workshop and stay connected to learn more.  The workshop and dashboard are supported by the Campus as a Living Lab program in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Office of Climate and Sustainability.
