Description

Miguel Farías, one of Latin America's most innovative composers, will visit the Peabody Institute this February. A Chilean-Venezuelan native, Farías is renowned for his bold musical voice and ability to merge traditional and contemporary influences. His works are being performed by leading orchestras in the U.S., such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, San Diego Symphony, and Minnesota Orchestra, as well as ensembles worldwide, earning him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Premio Altazor. Known for his keen exploration of identity and culture through music, Farías has become a significant figure in modern composition, and Peabody is thrilled to welcome him to campus.

Celebrating Diversity Through Music

The Peabody Youth Orchestra (PYO), under the direction of Venezuelan conductor Andrés González, is deeply committed to fostering diversity and inclusion through its programming. Each concert cycle highlights works by women and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) composers, exposing students to a rich and varied repertoire while providing equal musical challenges and opportunities for growth.

This commitment takes center stage during the upcoming Extravaganza Concert. This special performance not only celebrates the winners of the Concerto Competition but also features Miguel Farías' masterful work, Retratos Australes, a vibrant orchestral suite that reflects Farías' deep connection to the landscapes and cultures of Latin America. The piece showcases rich textures, evocative harmonies, and rhythmic vitality, making it an engaging and dynamic experience for both performers and audiences. You can listen to Farías' works on Spotify.

This event is co-hosted by the Program in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies.
