Exhibition: History Through Poetry
Description
Installed throughout Homewood Museum's period rooms, this exhibition features new original poems inspired by the collection. Considering decorative arts and material culture while honoring the lives of the enslaved people who once lived and worked at Homewood, the poems bridge creative imagination with historic research to bring paintings, furnishings, and other artifacts to life for visitors.
The exhibition is the culmination of a Johns Hopkins First-Year Seminar that explores the study and practice of poetry to bring to light overlooked stories and give voice to the voiceless, materializing meaning out of absences and questions. The seminar was taught by Dora Malech through a collaboration between the Krieger First-Year Seminars, The Writing Seminars, and the Homewood Museum. Visit the museum to experience some of the campus's oldest material culture through the work of some of its newest students.
Curated by Michelle Fitzgerald, the exhibition is open to the public during regular museum hours: Dec. 11, 2024, to Aug. 31, 2025, Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. No advance registration required.
