Convergences: Climate, Health, Litigation
Description
Donald Pols, head of Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie), will lead a panel titled "Convergences: Climate, Health, Litigation." Pols spearheaded Milieudefensie's legal case against Shell together with experts on litigation, policy, and health to discuss convergences among the various domains to forge meaningful climate action toward protecting our world.
The year 2022 saw the greatest number of legal cases relating to climate. Courts everywhere have heard cases ranging from efforts to prevent the expansion of fossil fuel and petrochemical extraction to challenges to government for their continued inaction in regulating companies and holding them accountable. The most notable of these legal actions is the 2021 case won by Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie), 17,000 other plaintiffs and six organizations against Shell in the International Court of Justice. Shell was told to cut its emissions by 45% within 10 years but which it avoids by means of the appeals process.
Other panelists include:
- Upasana Khatri, senior attorney, Climate and Energy Program, Center for International Environmental Law
- Naveeda Khan, associate professor in anthropology, Johns Hopkins University
- Scot Miller, assistant professor in environmental health and engineering, Johns Hopkins University
