Description

Daniel Freund, Green Party member of the European Parliament, and filmmaker Michael Wech will lead an exclusive conversation titled "Democracy on the Brink?" about the E.U. and recent attempts to safeguard its democratic principles. Freund, a driving force behind recent reforms, and Wech will offer insights into the E.U.'s recent crisis over the rule of law and the (mis)use of E.U. funds.

  • Is the E.U. doomed to fail?
  • Do European taxpayers fund authoritarian regimes?
  • Can member states morph into dictatorships?
  • What does European democracy stand for and why should we care?

This conversation will be moderated by Victoria Harms, DAAD visiting assistant professor in the Department of History and alumna of the Central European University (formerly in Budapest) and is hosted by the Political Science Steering Committee and the lecture course "Europe Since 1945."

In preparation, Johns Hopkins affiliates enjoy exclusive access to Michael Wech's compelling documentary Hello, Dictator. Orbán, the EU, and the Rule of Law (click RENT and enter discount code: EuropeSince1945).

This is a hybrid event; to attend virtually, please use the Zoom link.

This event is made possible with generous funding from DAAD: Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst/German Academic Exchange Service.
