Description

Revathi Balasubramanian, a research scientist in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Columbia University Medical Center, will give a Special Seminar titled "Mechanisms of Angle Development and Congenital Glaucoma" for the Department of Biology.

Abstract:

Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is a major risk factor for glaucoma. Drainage structures in the eye (Schlemm's canal and trabecular meshwork) regulate IOP. In several cases of glaucoma and especially early-onset glaucoma, the drainage structures are affected. To address this, we need to understand the developmental genetics of Schlemm's canal and trabecular meshwork. Using a mouse model of early-onset glaucoma and single cell transcriptomics, I will provide an understanding of how drainage structures develop. I will discuss some mechanisms through which abnormalities in drainage tissue cause early-onset glaucoma. A mechanistic understanding will lead to the development of new treatment targets for early-onset glaucoma.
