Auditions for "The Glass Menagerie"
Description
The Johns Hopkins Theatre Arts and Studies program will hold auditions for its Fall 2022 production of The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, which will be directed by Gerrad Alex Taylor, '10. Performances will take place Oct. 14-16 and 21-23.
Auditions will take place on May 5 and callbacks will take place on May 6 from noon to 3 p.m. For your audition, please prepare a monologue from a playwright of the Early American Realism Era, such as Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Eugene O'Neil, Lorraine Hansberry, Lillian Hellman, Alice Childress, Clifford Odets, William Inge, Edward Albee, etc.
The Glass Menagerie catapulted Tennessee Williams into mainstream fame and a career that garnered him recognition as one of the foremost playwrights of 20th-century American drama. As we approach the 80th anniversary of "Portrait of a Girl in Glass," Williams's short story on which the play is based, director Gerrad Alex Taylor and Johns Hopkins University Theatre Arts and Studies seek to uncover the elements of the play and playwright that ground it as a valuable story today. In 2022, as we attempt to right the past injustices against people of differing races and creeds, gender identities and sexualities, physical disabilities, and sensory needs, The Glass Menagerie tackles many of the important contemporary questions of equity and access on our stages, around our campus, and in our world.
Gerrad Alex Taylor, '10, is an award-winning director and actor based out of the DMV region who has worked with theaters and educational institutions across the country, including Johns Hopkins University. Taylor will bring in a professional Baltimore-based actor to play the role of Amanda Wingfield and provide an opportunity of insight and training of the larger professional theater world into the rehearsal room. Please come out and audition for the fall production and take part in this exciting exploration of how this American classic can affect our contemporary lives.
The Johns Hopkins Theatre Arts and Studies program welcomes accessibility requests to accommodate actors with disabilities. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email theatrearts@jhu.edu.
