Building an Asian American and Asian Diaspora Program: A Roundtable with Current and Former Directors
Description
Ji-Yeon Yuh from Northwestern University, Fariha Khan from the University of Pennsylvania, and Heidi Kim from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will discuss "Building an Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies Program" for the Critical Responses to Anti-Asian Violence (CRAAV) Initiative at Johns Hopkins.
What are the challenges and opportunities of creating an Asian American and Diaspora Studies program on campus? Current and former directors of Asian American Studies programs at Northwestern University, the University of Pennsylvania, and UNC Chapel Hill will discuss the history of their respective programs, their experiences in building a space for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in their institutions, and the role of student activism in pushing for social change in the university.
This event is co-sponsored by the Racism, Immigration, and Citizenship Program, the Alexander Grass Humanities Institute, and the Program in East Asian Studies. Critical Responses to Anti-Asian Violence (CRAAV) is a scholarly and community-oriented initiative to build anti-racist coalitions across Johns Hopkins University and Baltimore. Funding for this initiative has been provided by the SNF Agora Faculty Grants Program.
