Description

Based on Nella Larsen's 1929 novel by the same name, the film Passing brings to the screen a classic in black literature that captures the drama, personal costs, and history that confronted those whose complexions allowed them, for various reasons, to "pass" as white.

Please join renowned scholars Martha Jones, Tanisha Ford, and Kinitra Brooks in exploring these issues, discussing how well the film captures Larsen's novel tackles the history of passing and what the history of race, complexion, identity, and racial oppression in the early 20th century can tell us about the anti-black world that we live in today.

This event is hosted by the Center for Africana Studies.
