Description

Beth Blauer, associate vice provost for public sector innovation and a professor of the practice at the Carey Business School, will give a talk titled "Putting Data to Work in Cities and Beyond" for the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering.

Blauer will provide an introduction to her work with highlights of how she came to be a leading expert in government performance and data use. Blauer will highlight the work she has led at the Center for Government Excellence to improve the capacity of policy makers to use data when tackling some of their most intractable challenges -- everything from poverty eradication, public safety, to public health, and more. Blauer will deep dive in a specific example that will walk through the methods and strategies deployed in a global city that was looking to bridge the gap between their most vulnerable populations and essential health services. The talk will use examples of impacts, challenges, and chart the course for the future of data analytics in post-covid cities. Blauer will also preview emerging work that she doing in partnership with the Center for Systems Science and Engineering and Lauren Gardner, building off their successful partnership around COVID-19 data visualizations used to support cities that were working hard to direct limited resources to their residents.
