Description

America's system of higher education, particularly graduate education, remains the envy of the entire world. But this has not always been the case. This year's Master of Liberal Arts Colloquium's keynote speaker, Michael T. Benson, will discuss the history of Johns Hopkins and the modern American research university. Learn more about the event online.

Michael T. Benson is president and professor of history at Coastal Carolina University. A 25-year veteran of various positions in public higher education, Benson has served as president of four different colleges and universities in Utah, Kentucky, and South Carolina. Benson began his academic and professional career studying and working in Italy, England, and Israel for over six years.

Benson earned a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University, a master's degree from the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame, and a doctorate in modern history from the University of Oxford, where he was a Rotary Foundation Scholar and member of the Oxford Blues basketball team. He will complete the requirements for the master's degree in liberal arts (MLA) from Johns Hopkins University in August 2021.
