With a passion for technology and a fascination with medicine, Doug Becker founded his first company, LifeCard International, at the age of 17. The company received its initial funding from Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) of Maryland and developed one of the first systems for computerizing medical records. BCBS acquired the company a few years later, allowing Becker and his partners to start an investment company called Sterling Partners in 1983.
Since then, Sterling has become a leading investor in education and other industries, having made more than 80 investments over the years. As Sterling increasingly focused on education-related ventures, Becker turned to starting and leading companies in this field. His first venture was Sylvan Learning Systems that became the largest tutoring company in the U.S. Sylvan created and spun out numerous education companies, including Laureate Education, which became the largest higher education company in the world. Having founded Laureate, Becker served as its CEO from inception in 1999 through the end of 2017 and as chair through 2018. At its height, Laureate had over 1,000,000 students enrolled at 70 campus-based and online institutions owned or managed by the company, in 29 countries around the world, offering bachelors and advanced degrees in almost every field of study.
Becker's most recent entrepreneurial venture, Cintana Education, arose out of his belief that universities play an indispensable role in the development of nations, communities, and individuals, and that more students deserve access to the resources of the world's top-tier universities. Cintana provides world-class expertise and access to its own proprietary resources as well as those of Arizona State University. Together, they are building the Cintana Alliance, an international network of universities that will work together to meet the rising global demand for high quality post-secondary education.
Becker has served on many non-profit boards and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins International. He is also chair of the board of the International Youth Foundation, a global NGO focusing on the needs of youth in over 100 countries, including many of the most impoverished nations.
The goal of Leading Change: Perspectives from Outside of Medicine "Conversation Series 2021" is to help attendees think about ways to improve "the patient experience" at Johns Hopkins by learning from experts in other fields and disciplines. The lectures are open to all members of the Johns Hopkins community and we look forward to seeing you there. In order to allow for an open exchange between the speaker and the audience we will not record or broadcast the lecture.
