Description

Stuart Eizenstat, an ambassador, diplomat, and attorney, will present a lecture entitled "Justice for Holocaust Survivors: The Past, What Remains to be Done, and Lessons for the 21st Century" as part of the Leading Change: Perspectives from Outside of Medicine "Conversation Series 2021." A Q&A session will follow the lecture.

Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat is a senior member of Covington & Burling LLP's international practice. His work at Covington focuses on resolving international trade problems and business disputes with the U.S. and foreign governments, and international business transactions and regulations on behalf of U.S. companies and others around the world.

During a decade and a half of public service in four U.S. administrations, Ambassador Eizenstat has held a number of key senior positions. During the Obama Administration, he served as special advisor on Holocaust-era issues to Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry (2009–2017). He was the U. S. ambassador to the European Union; undersecretary of commerce for international trade; undersecretary of state for economic, business, and agricultural affairs; and deputy secretary of the treasury in the Clinton Administration (1993–2001). He was the chief White House domestic policy adviser to President Jimmy Carter (1977–1981). He also served as a member of the White House staff for President Lyndon B. Johnson (1967–1968).

Much of the interest in providing belated justice for victims of the Holocaust and other victims of Nazi tyranny during World War II was the result of his leadership of the Clinton Administration as special representative of the president and secretary of state on Holocaust-era issues (1993–2001). He successfully negotiated major agreements with the Swiss, Germans, Austrians, French, and other European countries, covering restitution of property, payment for slave and forced laborers, recovery of looted art, bank accounts, and payment of insurance policies.

The goal of Leading Change: Perspectives from Outside of Medicine "Conversation Series 2021" is to help attendees think about ways to improve "the patient experience" at Johns Hopkins by learning from experts in other fields and disciplines. The lectures are open to all members of the Johns Hopkins community and we look forward to seeing you there. In order to allow for an open exchange between the speaker and the audience we will not record or broadcast the lecture.

Please attend the event by using the Zoom link (Passcode: 597173).
