Description

This Johns Hopkins–wide, quarterly seminar series is co-lead by Bonnielin Swenor from the School of Medicine, Janiece Taylor from the School of Nursing, and Roland Thorpe from the School of Public Health and sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Disability Health Research Center and the School of Nursing Resilience Center. This seminar series invites researchers from across Johns Hopkins, many of whom may not have a background in disability or disability focus in their work. The overall goal of this seminar series is to encourage broader thinking about how disability is included and discussed in research and clinical settings.

This session is titled "How to Include People with Disabilities in Research and Medicine: A Discussion About Disability Identity." The conversation will focus on the identities associated with disability and how they are often not considered in medical and research settings. Panelists will focus on the heterogeneity of identities within the disability community and the ways medical professionals and researchers can be inclusive of these identities. The panelists include:

  • Kara Ayers, assistant professor of pediatrics at University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Ph.D. in clinical psychology
  • Christopher Moreland, associate professor and associate residency program director at the Department of Internal Medicine Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin
  • Nichole Taylor, assistant dean of student affairs at Wake Forest School of Medicine and associate professor of clinical anesthesiology

CART services will be provided. This event is supported by the JHU Ten by Twenty Challenge Grant.
