Description
April Hughes, assistant professor of religion at Boston University, will give a talk entitled "Text, Materiality, and Practice in Silk Road Buddhist Manuscripts" for the Program in East Asian Studies.
What can textual combinations, format, and size tell us about the worldviews of the donors, scribes, and readers of medieval Chinese Buddhist manuscripts? How can material sources inform us about the ways adherents both perceived and actively shaped their traditions? In this talk, I try to answer these questions through an examination of medieval era scrolls and booklets from the Silk Road site of Dunhuang.

This event is co-sponsored by the Alexander Grass Humanities Institute, the Art History Department, and the History Department.
