Description

The Sawyer Seminar: Precision and Uncertainty in a World of Data, co-sponsored by the Johns Hopkins chapter of the American Association of University Professors, presents "The Data Environment and the New University," where experts will be speaking about how the uses of data are transforming the university environment.

How do universities track students, departments, faculty, and other employees? What does university-related data have to say about us, what we are learning, how we are putting it to use, and how productive we are? What are some of the methodological, ethical, and political questions raised by the university usage of such data?

Presenters include:

  • Shreeharsh Kelkar, lecturer in interdisciplinary studies at the University of California, Berkeley
  • Brian Cameron, head of Library Collection Services at Ryerson University
  • Nicholas Hartlep, chair of the Department of Education Studies at Berea College
  • Veena Das, professor of anthropology at the Johns Hopkins University
  • Ian Lowrie, an anthropologist, visiting assistant professor of urban social science at Portland State University, and user researcher with Ad Hoc
  • Chris Morphew, dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Education
  • Shane Butler, professor of classics and director of the Classics Research Lab at Johns Hopkins University
