Description

Turkish-German author and social activist Ali Can will give a talk entitled "Who's German? Diversity and Race in 2019 Germany" for the Johns Hopkins German Program, the Max Kade Center for German Thought, the Johns Hopkins Chapter of European Horizons, and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany.

With the rise of a virulent far right, the question of who counts as German once again divides society. Millions of people in Germany are "German and something else": They feel just as much at home in this country as in another language and culture. However, they are constantly told that they do not really belong. Ali Can is convinced: Our true home rests on the values that we all share. And everyone – with or without a (family) history of migration – who lives in this country should be able to participate in an open, constructive conversation about those values.

Turkish refreshments will be served, and the lecture and the discussion will be in English.
