Description

The German program at Johns Hopkins University commemorates 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall with Margarethe von Trotta's 1995 film Das Versprechen (The Promise). The film is in German with English subtitles. Refreshments will be served. There will also be an in-depth discussion on Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. in Gilman 479 with faculty and students.

This 1995 film from director Margarethe von Trotta (Hannah Arendt) traces 28 years of division and separation through the Berlin Wall via the love story of Konrad and Sophie. Separated in 1961 by a failed escape attempt, they persist in their attachment despite seeing each other only four times over almost three decades. Maret Becker, Corinna Harfouch, and August Zimer star in one of the first post-wall films to tackle the emotional and personal toll of the clashing political ideologies in East and West Germany.

Sponsored by @GermanyinUSA, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington, and the Johns Hopkins School of Arts and Sciences.
