Description

The Department of Civil Engineering is pleased to welcome Amit H. Varma, a professor in civil engineering at Purdue University, for a seminar titled "Steel-Concrete Composite Construction: The Best of Both Worlds."

Abstract:

Steel-concrete composite construction combines the advantage of both steel and concrete materials and construction approaches. Composite plate shear walls (CPSW) have emerged as a viable, efficient and robust alternative to reinforced concrete walls. Research is being conducted to establish the behavior, analysis and design of coupled composite plate shear walls (CC-PSW) with filled composite coupling beams for the elevator cores of medium- and high-rise buildings. This presentation will highlight the origin, evolution and key aspects of the innovative CC-PSW/CF structural system. The presentation will also showcase the results and findings from ongoing research projects focusing on: (i) the lateral load behavior of the system for wind and seismic loading, (ii) FEMA P695 studies conducted to evaluate the seismic response modification factors (R, Cd, Ω") for the system, and (iii) the fire resistance of composite walls.
