Description

The Institute for Data Intensive Engineering and Science is honored to present Kevin Schlaufman, assistant professor in the Johns Hopkins Department of Physics and Astronomy, who will give a talk entitled "The Importance of Broad and Deep Domain Knowledge in Data Intensive Engineering and Science."

Abstract:

Advances in computer hardware, software, and technical instrumentation have revolutionized science and engineering. These advances have made old skills obsolete and elevated new skills to paramount importance. Despite these changes, a broad and deep disciplinary knowledge is still critical for discovery in science and engineering. Using examples from my own experience and research in exoplanets and planet formation, I'll show that progress is most rapid when large data sets are interrogated with new questions and not just new algorithms.
