Willem de Kooning's Monumental Sculptures: The Artist/ Artisan Collaboration

To celebrate the long-term loan of Willem de Kooning's monumental sculpture Reclining Figure, 1969-1982, on view on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus, the Sheridan Libraries & University Museums, The Willem de Kooning Foundation, and the Department of the History of Art welcome sculptor Vanessa Hoheb to campus.

Between 1980 and 1984, Willem de Kooning, one of America's most influential artists and a leader of the 20th century Abstract Expressionist movement, engaged Hoheb Studios in New York to enlarge three of his hand-sized 1969 sculptures, to mid- and monumental sizes. Vanessa Hoheb will provide an in-depth presentation on the creative and technical processes used in the development of these important works, while offering an eyewitness's glimpse into who de Kooning was as an artist and person. Her talk will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Molly Warnock, an assistant professor of the History of Art at Johns Hopkins.

This is the first talk in a series initiated by The Willem de Kooning Foundation called de Kooning Conversations of which phase I is Insiders. The purpose of this series is to encourage dialogue around artworks on long-term loan from the Foundation.
