Jade McCalla of Hopkins Dining, which services the Homewood and Peabody campuses, won first place at the Premier Breakthroughs Culinary Competition held in July in National Harbor, Maryland. McCalla is sous chef at Nolan's on 33rd on the Homewood campus. She submitted a recipe addressing certain requirements and was one of three chefs selected from 40 applicants to compete live during the Food Service Awards Dinner. McCalla's winning dish was falafel "chicken" and waffle; peach, whiskey, and black garlic compote; and roasted corn and white bean hash. Premier Breakthroughs is a national conference of food service vendors.
1876 Distinction Catering, a part of Hopkins Dining, was awarded silver for Catering Program of the Year as part of the National Association of College & University Food Services' Loyal E. Horton Awards. The honor recognizes outstanding catering programs that show value to their campus in everyday ways.
